Spend a Pleasant Evening in the Night Village
By Gary L. Connely
Karla Gerard is a contemporary American folk artist. Her paintings are colorful and tend to be abstract. "Night Village" is a typical example of her work - half a dozen of which are in Artifact's puzzle catalog.
Once located in Seattle, but now in Silicon Valley, (the owner's day job is in the computer industry), Artifact Puzzles is a tiny manufacturer of high quality wooden jigsaw puzzles. The puzzles are created using high resolution photographic reproductions; printed with colorful soy-based inks; bonded to 1/4 inch plywood - and then cut using a sophisticated laser technology. The resulting puzzles rival the very best Victorian hand-cut puzzles.
"Night Village" is 7"X9" with 164 pieces. Except for a few "whimsies," pieces cut in the shape of animals - mostly cats and rabbits - this is just a straight ahead, no-frills jig saw - there are none of the false corners, irregular edges, or multiple possible connectors that will bedevil you if you try one of Artifact's larger puzzles.
A word of caution - the pieces are precisely cut and the fit is excellent - but the pieces are very small. This is not a puzzle for young children. It is also a puzzle to keep away from the family dog if, like my Scotty, they happen to enjoy chewing on a piece of wood now and then. Take it from me, a determined mutt can make short work of an Artifact puzzle if, in my case, she gets a hold of it.
If you are unfamiliar with the world of wooden jigsaws, you won't find a better introduction than a puzzle from Artifact. They are not necessarily cheap - but their quality is very high - you'll get what you've paid for.

It was fun and great. Loved the little animal shapes. We preserved it.
